Safety, Health, Environment and Quality
At SMS, our approach to Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) can be boiled down to three core principles: we plan every project properly, we perform our work to the highest standards, and we protect the people, communities, services, and environments we affect.
We implement these principles across all of our work:
- Before we begin any project, our teams identify any risks, confirm the requirements, and make sure our people have the right training, information, and resources.
- During delivery, we follow agreed safety, environmental, and quality controls while working responsibly and efficiently.
- After completion, we conduct an in-depth review of how the project was delivered, identify lessons, and use them to improve our future work.
At SMS, SHEQ is everyone’s responsibility. Our people are encouraged and expected to raise concerns, report risks, and share learnings that can improve safety and performance.

Our teams assess environmental risks, use resources efficiently, and look for practical ways to reduce our waste and environmental impact. We use environmental performance data and lessons from our work to strengthen how we manage those impacts across future projects.

Our Integrated Management System (IMS) provides a structured framework for managing quality, environmental responsibilities, and occupational health and safety across SMS.
The IMS is independently certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001. These internationally recognised certifications provide independent assurance that our management systems meet established standards for quality, environmental management, and occupational health and safety.
SMS also maintains recognised industry accreditations, including Achilles UVDB and SafeContractor. These provide further assurance of our competence, compliance, and commitment to best practice, while regular audits, performance monitoring, and management review allow us to check whether our controls are working as intended, identify gaps, and make improvements where needed.
Together, our management systems, certifications, and accreditations provide independent assurance that safety, quality, environmental responsibility, and continual improvement remain at the heart of everything we do.
